Rainforest Foods Organic Spirulina contains all eight of the essential amino acids - those that our body cannot manufacture for itself and that we must obtain from our food, making it a useful protein source for vegetarians. This is reinforced by the presence of important vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin B12 (often lacking in a vegetarian diet), Vitamin A, B-1, B-2, and B-6, Iron, Calcium, and antioxidant compounds. Spirulina is also rich in other important phytonutrients, enzymes, and trace elements. It provides Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, including Linoleic acid and Gamma-linolenic acid. Spirulina is a good, basic support to a healthy diet.

Spirulina is the name given to Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima, strains of spiral-shaped algae that flourish in subtropical and tropical waters. It is referred to as a blue-green algae, thanks to the presence of chlorophyll and phycocyanin.

Production

Rainforest Foods Spirulina is grown organically on an island in the South China Sea. Production starts with batches cultivated in a laboratory, which are grown by photosynthesis in cultivation ponds containing filtered natural water. Once it has reached the required density the Spirulina is harvested, then dried using a process of spray evaporation to create a powder while losing virtually none of the nutritional value. No other ingredients are added, the tablets are 100% pure organic Spirulina.

Organic Certification

Certified by the Soil Association, one of a handful of organic certification bodies in the UK. These are regulated in their turn by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). The role of the Soil Association is to ensure that all foods sold as organic are definably so. It does this by auditing every stage of the supply chain, through growth, export, and processing. Soil Association certification - indicated by the Soil Association logo and the EU organic leaf symbol on our packaging - is a guarantee that our customers are purchasing an organic product. All organically-certified products must also carry a certification code on their packaging. For UK companies such as Rainforest Foods, this has the format GB-ORG-XX, XX indicating the certifying body. If this is not present, a product is not organic. The Soil Association code on our products is GB-ORG-05.

Directions

Take half a teaspoon of Spirulina mixed with water, juice, or in a smoothie, once or twice a day for the first week. Increase this to a full teaspoon after 1 week.
